Phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of flowers of Terminalia brownii

Terminalia brownii is traditionally used in treatment and management of human illness such as arthritis, hepatitis, diabetes, stomach ulcers, abdominal pain yellow fever. The objective this study aimed at determining phytochemical, antibacterial antifungal activity flower extracts. Extraction was performed using n-hexane, dichloromethane, dichloromethane: methanol (1:1), water. extracts were screened for the presences phytochemicals namely alkaloids, flavonoids, tannin, terpenoids, saponins, steroids, phenols glycosides. Antibacterial test Crude flowers tested against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Staphylococcus Aureus Candida albicans. Phytochemical screening (1:1) extract revealed presence absence flavonoids steroids both Glycoside terpenoids only found extract. water crude E. P. aeroginosa S. showed that all except n-hexane exhibited good Aureus, Aeroginosa with zone inhibition ranging between 8.0 ±0.71 17.3 ±0.42 mm. Dichloromethane: highest inhibitory coli 17.3±0.42 16.0±0.71 respectively. Only Methanol albicans 7.6±0.84 most active minimum concentration (MIC) aeruginosa decreasing starting from 9.25±1.34 7.50±0.42 mm MIC values higher (1.25±0.07 mm). present concluded are almost similar those identified previous studies roots, stem bark leaves brownii.
